IT woes
Well, it's not really IT's fault, they are just following orders. I'll blame my favorite scapegoat: upper management. No unauthorized software allowed on company machines. That includes all internet apps (AIM, weatherbug, etc) and TECHNICALLY anything not work related (I downloaded winamp anyway). To enforce this, administrative rights have been taken away from all users except the IT folk. What a crock. What if i choose to waste my lunch talking to my friends? I can't even change the clock to read the right fucking time - the computer is 20 minutes behind - has been for months now. What's next? No internet?bastards

That does suck. In my office, we use AIM to cut down on unnecessary emails. Perhaps you could make that point to Upper Management? ;)
Just noticed your comments, thought I might point you to a site WeatherBug has created for IT depts to dispel any concerns over system or network resources.

If your IT dept has any questions regarding the WeatherBug application, concerns over network/workstation security, please have them contact me directly, I will get them in touch with the right dept to get their concerns addressed.
My email: mhartley(at)aws(dot)com
I would not survive work if I couldn't use AIM or play internet computer games...
When I was working for Liberty Mutual, everyone was so excited to get the internet in 2000 for all employees--not just management. Well, by the time I returned to the country in 2002 and I talked to my old assistant Audra, she said the company now monitors internet use, sends warnings to people on too long, doesn't allow any downloads off the internet, etc. What happened was too many people were abusing the privileges, someone may have downloaded a program or sent an email with a damaging virus or they probably found a large amount of people downloading something off of www.bigbootyhos.com--and the company decided to take action. What happened there is probably what happened in the case of your firm as well. When someone starts to have a little too much fun at work and treats their work computer like a home computer, they ruin it for everyone. Then the suits start to take away too many privileges which as is evident in your case not only makes work seem unpleasant but also makes working your job that much more difficult. A few bad apples ruin the whole damn bunch. It's a paradigm shift we don't need in the workplace and it's too bad.
That's exactly why use is restiriced around here now. Someone recieve a virus through an outside mail or IRC client and it caused all kinds of problems with the print servers as well as the accounting database. As a result, those functions had to be completely rebuilt. I do understand the reason behind it, but the fact that it has to happen due to someone else's irresponsibility is a shame.
